Cangrande della Scala is everything a man should be. Daring. Ambitious. Charming. Brilliant. Ruthless. To the poet Dante - indeed, to the world - Cangrande is the ideal Renaissance prince.
Until Dante’s son discovers a secret that could be Cangrande’s undoing.
Suddenly thrust into the schemes and betrayals surrounding Verona’s prince, Pietro Alighieri must navigate a rivalry that severs a friendship, divides a city, and sparks a feud that will produce Shakespeare’s famous star-crossed lovers, Romeo & Juliet!
Based on the plays of William Shakespeare and the poetry of Dante, THE MASTER OF VERONA is a sweeping novel of Renaissance Italy. Filled with swashbuckling adventure, unrequited love, and brutal treachery, this epic journey recalls the best of Bernard Cornwell, Sharon Kay Penman, and Dorothy Dunnett.
The Master of Verona StarCross'd Book 1 edition by David Blixt Literature Fiction eBooks
This is medieval historical fiction set in Northern Italy in 1314-1315. A lot was happening in Europe during that time. In northern Italy, various city states were at war with each other, and that was compounded by family feuds, tangled family alliances, some amount of fratricide, commercial competition, and exiles. The novel starts with an attempted assassination in Padua. The main story revolves around the conflict between Verona and Padua, but there is underlying intrigue within families, and a major side issue concerning the Poet Dante who has been exiled from Florence.Reading this story is somewhat like reading War and Peace. There is a muddle of names compounded by people sometimes being referred to by nicknames. There are digressions into side stories, background color, character development, and some amount of back story., There is a competing love interest and a duel.
The story wraps up most things at the end, but some things are left unresolved with one bad guy on the run. Stay tuned.

The Master of Verona StarCross'd Book 1 edition by David Blixt Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I saw David Blixt on stage and met him before I read the books. I read Origin of the Feud first and was fascinated about the theories proposed about Romeo and Juliet. That led me to this book, and then to the other three in the series. I started them because I am a Shakespeare fan. I stayed with them because the characters are a wonderful mix of characters from Shakespeare, from history, and from David's imagination. They are rich, complex characters in a fully realized world. Details, language, setting all pull you in. I have recommended this series to friends, and they have thanked me. While reading these books, I have wept and laughed. I have been happy, and furious. I have been pleased, surprised and horrified. I even messaged Mr. Blixt to yell at him about how he was treating a character. That's how much you will care for these people.
The Master of Verona, by David Blixt the first in his “Star Cross’d” series of which there are currently four books published, is a rich and riveting telling of the backstory of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” I feel it important to note that I am myself a “Romeo and Juliet” fiction author, my own work, written with my co-author Emily Dodi (“Before Romeo and Juliet”) is available online at beforeromeoandjuliet.com where installments are published regularly. In researching our book, I have read my share of R&J prequels, sequels, and fan fiction. Blixt’s books are head and shoulders above almost everything I’ve read.
David Blixt, when he is not writing historical fiction, is the Artistic Associate at the Michigan Shakespeare Festival. Blixt is also a Shakespearean actor who has played in R&J as well as a director. His intimate relationship with Shakespeare’s plots through staging, directing, and acting informs his story and gives the breath of life to his intricately choreographed plot.
“Master of Verona” traces the origins of the Capulet and Montague feud through the patriarchs of those families’ beginning the story when they are young men. Blixt expands on the role of “Prince Escalus” interpreting him as the historical figure of Cangrande della Scala, the real life Podesta of Verona in the early 1300s.
Blixt expands the cast of Shakespeare characters by introducing Dante and his family, exiled from Florence to the tale. He also adds characters from Shakespeare’s other Italian plays (Taming of the Shrew, Two Gentlemen of Verona, and Merchant of Venice) round out the story line.
Pietro Alighieri, the seventeen year old son of Dante, upon arriving in Verona with his esteemed father, makes acquaintance with two young men Mariotto Montecchio and Antonio Capulletto. Unexpectedly they find themselves participants in a battle between Verona and Padua, flanking Cangrande, proving their loyalty and worth, and cementing their place in Prince Escalus’ inner circle.
Blixt augments the storyline of his series with well researched and era-appropriate details. Chivalry, the Palio, and battles between Verona and Padua enliven the story line and give the tale a robust masculinity sometimes seen as lacking from Shakespeare.
Prophecies, mysterious shrouded women, a babe in swaddling clothes are woven throughout the tale. This book packs a lot of action and detail into its 570 pages! No wonder Blixt has written four more books and plans on writing seven in all to conclude this rich and intricate narrative.
I highly recommend “Master of Verona” and the entire Star Cross’d series. I hope Mr. Blixt can find time to finish writing the fifth title in the series, “Captive Colours”—at present, there is no publication date available.
Absolutely engaging read; hard to put down! A great many allusions to other historical authors (primarily Shakespeare and Dante) and events that assume a very literate reader. You could enjoy the story without a strong literary background but you would miss many of the references.
One very challenging aspect of the writing are the MANY Italian characters (with authentic Italian names) that are difficult to keep straight especially because the author sometimes refers to individuals by their family names, sometimes by their given names, and sometimes by their nicknames. Also, Blixt uses numerous Italian phrases (without translation) which will probably be lost on most readers--unless you speak Italian.
Despite these challenges, I liked the book so much that I've already started the second book of the Star-Cros'd series.
