The thesis of this book is three-fold 1) That Christianity is obsolete 2) That we therefore need to move on to a better Jesus-inspired thought system 3) That such a thought system is now available. While there are many voices today that would consent to the first of these three statements, or something like it, we do not receive much help with the second, while the third is largely unknown. Yet today we have at our disposal a means by which the problem of Christian dysfunction can be solved. The purpose of this short book is to help people to upgrade to that solution. You can't judge a book by it's more than modest cover - because this little book has a great big jewel hidden inside. Long ago I walked away from my Christian church in disgust. Over the years I've had that nagging feeling that I may have thrown the baby out with the bathwater.Magee nails it. He deconstructs our modern day Christianity and shows us where we have derailed ourselves with a spiritually immature understanding. The author helped me organize my thinking and pointed me in a better direction. He lays out the basics of detaching Jesus from Christianity and helped me upgrade my understanding.
I took his recommendation to dive into "The Course in Miracles" - and have been a student of this transformative work ever since. Every now and then I get tangled up in The Course and reread this little book for clarity. If F. Hugh Magee didn't live on another continent, I'd be sitting in a front pew at every sermon he delivers. There are many pathways that will ultimately lead us back to God. And I have found that this little book is a very good roadmap to take on my journey home.

Hugh Magee's breezy trip through theological and Biblical waters is a good read and smashing overview of what is wrong with the church and Christianity.
He rightly tramples the beliefs that make Christianity irrelevant today like incarnation, suffering and redemption. However when he says "Since we create our own reality, we can change it by the choices we make." Good as far as it goes but I think of a child with cholera after the hurricane in Haiti and that kid can't change much by the choices he makes. The broken human condition and the problems of pain and suffering cannot be glossed over so glibly.
I liked the book and see it as a delightful smack at conventional thinking the the church today.
Cannon Magee has written a gem! Short, witty, controversial and very thought-provoking. If the Christian religion has been weighing heavily recently, this book is for you!

I had the privilege of having Father Magee as my pastor for ten years. I came to his church with some real reservations about the Christian church in general and about the concept of sin, particularly original sin. Father Magee helped me sort out my thoughts and come to a better understanding of what Jesus' message really was. He helped me learn how to overcome the fear I was taught in Christianity and how to overcome it with love. And now he has put his thoughts into a very concise little book that should be a real help in rediscovering Jesus.
Hugh Magee enlightens with his thesis on the Trinity but most importantly, the relevance of bridge building of your spiritual connection. It could open a new door that may traverse one out of a spiritual wilderness.
What a great read for those who are searchers. This wonderful little book is provocative, and it just maybe the link for those who have thrown their spiritual "baby out with the bathwater" and who desire to reconnect.

Hugh Magee's book has opened the door to the conversation about the true purpose of our beliefs. In this constantly changing world, our application of our beliefs must adjust to fit the current understanding of the people. I love that Hugh points out that we don't have to destroy our churches or give up our religions because we've outgrown them, but rather find the current expression of our connection to God within them.
