When Push Comes to Shove, the first of Callie London's Vampire Adventures by Jane Peyton, is creepy fun all the way through.As a Louisville native, I love viewing the familiar Derby Festival goings-on from an undead perspective. As a long-time vampire-book reader, I love Peyton's original twists of the tropes. Callie and her cohorts are old and know they're old. She calls a human who appears to be slightly older than she is "Child", and does it so naturally one could almost miss it. She is constantly brought up short to realize how much older than she is other vampires are.
Lovely stuff: funny, chilling, adventurous, complex, and thoroughly satisfying.
